Education
Education is one of our core values at Taco. We believe that the
company has an obligation to give back to the community. Providing
educational opportunities for employees and their families is one
important way we do so.
At Taco, education goes well beyond job training. In 1992, the company
formally opened the Taco Learning Center at its headquarters in
Cranston, RI. Here, and at a second learning center at the company's
Fall River, MA, facility, employees and their families can participate
in some 45 different courses that range from gauge reading to gardening.
Courses are developed to help employees gain new job skills, improve
their general education and learn about government and their
citizenship responsibilities. In addition to specifically job-related
courses, Taco Learning Center classes include:
- English as a Second Language for those who want to improve their ability to read, write and speak English
- General Education Development for employees who want to obtain their high school equivalency diploma
- Courses for college credit such as Spanish, oral
communications, HVAC research and design and accounting for
non-financial people.
- Non-credit courses to improve the quality of life,
including basic drawing and art appreciation, word processing,
financial planning and health and safety classes such as aerobics and
back injury prevention
The Taco Learning Center has enabled Taco to improve the overall skills
and effectiveness of its workforce through required, job-specific
technical training and also make major improvements in the way we do
business.
- A company-wide cross training program exposed all
employees, from upper management to maintenance personnel, to key
disciplines required for operating a business. The program includes
marketing, sales, quality assurance, computer technology, engineering,
manufacturing, finance, research and development and human resources.
By participating in the program, employees gained a greater
understanding of the function and responsibilities of the various
departments.
- Broad-based training in team-based manufacturing,
team building, and problem solving helped the company successfully
implement the disciplines required for ISO 9001 registration, that
demonstrates the company's adherence to world-class quality standards.
By investing in our employees, we acknowledge our role and
responsibility in our community and help assure that we'll have the
skilled workers we need to remain an industry leader in the high-tech
business environment of today and tomorrow.
