Do LEED-certified buildings save energy? Yes, but...

Preliminary report from the National Research Council of Canada's Institute for Research in Construction on the post-occupancy performance of LEED-certified commercial and institutional buildings.

Study finds that on average, LEED-certified buildings do use less energy, but some one-third actually use more energy than their conventionally-built counterparts.

LoadMatch System Engineering Design Considerations

For design engineers, the concern cited most often about LoadMatch® systems is the temperature cascade of the system. Because the water temperature in the loop changes, it would appear that the terminal units at the end of the loop won\'t be able to provide the necessary BTU\'s for the heating or cooling loads.

An examination of basic heat transfer fundamentals will provide the answer. As discussed in this bulletin, the use of basic principles of thermodynamics and psychrometrics will result in comfortable room conditions, including dehumidification, in very humid climates.

\'Water Facts and Trends 2005\' Examines Global Water Supply

\"Water Facts and Trends 2005,\" provides a brief, helpful overview of what is happening with the world\'s water supply. The report was developed to, \"promote understanding of the world water situation and to stimulate forward thinking on business as part of the solution to issues in water and sanitation,\" according to the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, (WBCSD), which prepared the report.

The 16-page report
  • Examines water use in agriculture, industry and households in various parts of the world.
  • Identifies areas where water supplies are likely to be stressed in the coming years.
  • Identifies trends-such as population growth, business expansion, urbanization and climate change-that will affect fresh water use.

The WBCSD is comprised of some 180 international companies with a shared commitment to sustainable development. Its members come from more than 30 countries and 20 major industrial sectors.

Earn LEED Points with LoadMatch Technical Bulletin

More new building projects every day are being designed and built to qualify for LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certification from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).

After careful review of the \"Green Building Rating System for New Construction & Major Renovations,\" (LEED-NC), Taco\'s HVAC pros have determined that using the Taco LoadMatch Hydronic System can help earn certification points for your project in three of the six areas of the standard.

The Taco technical bulletin, \"LoadMatch Systems & Green Buildings\" details how utilizing a LoadMatch System helps to earn LEED certification points in three areas of the LEED rating system-- Energy & Atmosphere, Indoor Environmental Quality, and Innovation and Design Process.

Sustainable Building Technical Manual

The Sustainable Building Technical Manual: Green Building Design, Construction and Operations was jointly produced by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Public Technology Inc, (PTI) to help developers, building owners, architects and others to utilize sustainable development practices in their building projects.

At some 300 pages long, this practical guide is one of the most comprehensive documents available on green building practices. Among the topics covered are:

  • The economics of green building
  • Pre-design strategies
  • Passive solar design
  • HVAC systems
  • Electricity
  • Plumbing
  • Indoor air quality
  • Acoustics
  • Selection of building and landscaping materials
