Popularity of Geothermal Systems Heats up in Pacific Northwest


Geothermal systems are becoming more popular with developers in the Pacific Northwest as they strive to make their buildings more eco-friendly and carbon neutral, reports the Daily Journal of Commerce, Portland, Ore.

According to Paul Schwer, a principal at PAE Consulting Engineers, his firm has already designed geothermal systems for the Port of Portland headquarters, the parking garage at the Portland International Airport, as well as buildings at Portland State University and Pacific Lutheran University.

Schwer said the geothermal systems appear to be catching on in the Northwest, as developers strive for greater efficiency and the possibility of building "net-zero" structures that use no energy, with the help of solar panels.
